Choosing a Band Saw

With this many models to choose from, the fastest path to the right band saw is knowing your size needs, your typical cut, and your available power.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a band saw:

  • Size and wheel diameter: We carry 10, 14, 18, 20, and 24 inch wheel sizes. Larger wheels generally support taller cuts, though frame design matters as much as wheel size. See our Resaw Bandsaws collection for models built specifically for tall resaw work.
  • Use case: General cutting and curve work call for a different saw than resaw work. Entry-level and benchtop models suit general cutting, while taller cutting-height models are built for resaw.
  • Space and portability: Benchtop and 10 inch models sit on a workbench, covered in our Benchtop Bandsaws and 10 Inch Band Saws collections. Every other size is a stationary, floor-standing machine, covered in our Stationary Band Saws collection.
  • Power and electrical service: Motors range from 1/2 to 5 HP. Select Powermatic models offer three-phase power for shops with commercial electrical service, covered in our Industrial Band Saws collection.
  • Blade speed: Most saws run a single fixed speed, but our Variable Speed Band Saws let you dial blade speed across a continuous range for finer control on different cuts.

Once you know your size, cut type, and available power, the brand you choose comes down to what each one does especially well.

JET Bandsaw

JET bandsaws are built for steady, dependable performance across the widest size range we carry, from compact benchtop models to 20 inch resaw machines. They're a strong fit for shops that want reliable cutting power without commercial-scale pricing.

Powermatic Bandsaw

Powermatic bandsaws are built for shops that need more capacity and flexible power options, with motor and phase configurations that scale from single-phase shops to full three-phase commercial service. ArmorGlide models add a coated table for shops running heavy daily cutting.

Laguna Bandsaw

Laguna bandsaws are known for their ceramic blade guide systems, which keep the blade tracking smoothly and reduce friction on long or demanding cuts. Laguna's lineup also includes our only variable speed models, for finer control over blade speed.


All three brands build genuine woodworking bandsaws backed by real cutting capacity. The right one comes down to whether your shop values broad accessibility, scalable power, or smooth ceramic-guided tracking.

Band Saws FAQs

How much does a band saw cost?

Prices in our lineup range from about $650 for a benchtop model to nearly $10,000 for an industrial three-phase machine. Most serious hobbyist and small shop saws fall between $1,200 and $5,000, depending on size, resaw capacity, and motor power.

What size band saw should I start with?

A 14 inch model is the most common starting point. It handles general cutting and moderate resaw work without the cost or footprint of a larger machine. If floor space is tight, a benchtop or 10 inch model is a smaller alternative.

Does a new band saw come with a blade?
