View full detailsFinding the right Laguna planer comes down to capacity, power, and cutterhead design. Use the quick guide below to see how each model fits different shop needs:
Compact size for small shops needing clean, everyday milling with quiet cutting and easy handling.
Mid-size capacity with stronger power and a shear-cut head for smooth, consistent milling on varied hardwoods.
Wider work area with added stability, digital readout, and dual feed speeds for repeatable fine adjustments.
Laguna’s largest planer with heavy-duty feeding, variable speed control, and wide-board capability for high-volume shops.
QuadTec II uses straight-row carbide inserts and is ideal for compact benchtop planers like the PX12. It gives cleaner cuts than traditional knives and handles everyday hardwoods well.
ShearTec II, used on the PX16, PX20, and PX22, uses a true shear-cut insert layout with more carbide inserts. It delivers smoother finishes, reduces tearout on figured woods, and runs quieter—making it better for higher-end or high-volume work.
Choose based on the widest boards you typically mill:
Picking the smallest planer that fits your common project width balances footprint, capability, and cost.
For light to moderate hardwood work, 2–5HP is enough for clean results without slowing down. For frequent milling, wide hardwood boards, or deeper cuts, the 7.5HP and 10HP options on the PX22 maintain cutterhead speed more reliably under load. More horsepower helps produce smoother surfaces with fewer repasses.
Yes. Laguna planers can be made mobile with the Universal Wheel System, which is designed for the PX16, PX20, and PX22 models. The swiveling caster makes it easier to move your planer around obstacles or into storage. It can free up floor space or allow you to reposition the planer for long stock without straining to lift or push it.
Yes. We offer replacement knives for both Laguna cutterhead styles. QuadTec II knives fit the PX12 planer and the JX6 and JX8 jointers, covering all QuadTec, QuadTec I, and QuadTec II cutterheads. ShearTec II knives fit the PX16, PX20, and PX22 planers, as well as any jointer equipped with a ShearTec II cutterhead. Each insert has four cutting edges, and once all four are used, a new set restores clean cutting performance.
