Laguna Planers FAQs

What’s the difference between the Laguna QuadTec II and ShearTec II cutterheads?

QuadTec II uses straight-row carbide inserts and is ideal for compact benchtop planers like the PX12. It gives cleaner cuts than traditional knives and handles everyday hardwoods well.

ShearTec II, used on the PX16, PX20, and PX22, uses a true shear-cut insert layout with more carbide inserts. It delivers smoother finishes, reduces tearout on figured woods, and runs quieter—making it better for higher-end or high-volume work.

How do I choose the right planer width for my shop?

Choose based on the widest boards you typically mill:

  • PX12 covers up to 12 inches for small-shop work
  • PX16 and PX20 handle mid-size cabinetry and furniture stock
  • PX22 supports wide panels and production-level work

Picking the smallest planer that fits your common project width balances footprint, capability, and cost.

How much horsepower do I really need for consistent milling?

For light to moderate hardwood work, 2–5HP is enough for clean results without slowing down. For frequent milling, wide hardwood boards, or deeper cuts, the 7.5HP and 10HP options on the PX22 maintain cutterhead speed more reliably under load. More horsepower helps produce smoother surfaces with fewer repasses.

Can I move my Laguna planer around my shop?

Yes. Laguna planers can be made mobile with the Universal Wheel System, which is designed for the PX16, PX20, and PX22 models. The swiveling caster makes it easier to move your planer around obstacles or into storage. It can free up floor space or allow you to reposition the planer for long stock without straining to lift or push it.

Do you offer replacement knives for Laguna planers?

Yes. We offer replacement knives for both Laguna cutterhead styles. QuadTec II knives fit the PX12 planer and the JX6 and JX8 jointers, covering all QuadTec, QuadTec I, and QuadTec II cutterheads. ShearTec II knives fit the PX16, PX20, and PX22 planers, as well as any jointer equipped with a ShearTec II cutterhead. Each insert has four cutting edges, and once all four are used, a new set restores clean cutting performance.
