What sizes do Powermatic jointers come in?

Powermatic jointers are available in 6", 8", and 12" and 16" widths. The Powermatic 54 covers 6", the Powermatic 60 and PJ-882 cover 8", the 1285 covers 12", and the PJ1696 covers 16".

What is a parallelogram jointer and do I need one?

A parallelogram jointer uses a four-point table design that keeps the infeed table perfectly parallel as you adjust cutting depth. This makes setup faster and more consistent. The PJ-882, 1285, and PJ1696 all use this design — it is a meaningful upgrade for shops doing frequent depth changes or high-volume jointing.

Should I choose a straight-knife or helical cutterhead on a Powermatic jointer?

Straight-knife models cost less and cut cleanly on straight-grained wood. Helical cutterheads use carbide inserts to reduce tear-out on figured or difficult grain and run quieter. If you work hardwoods regularly, the helical option is worth the upgrade.
