How to Choose a Bandsaw Blade

Four things decide the right blade for your bandsaw: width, tooth pattern, TPI, and length. Work through them in this order.

Match Blade Width to Your Cut

Narrow blades turn tight curves. Wide blades hold a straighter line, which is why resaw work calls for a wider blade than scroll work does. If you cut a mix of curves and straight lines, a mid-width blade is the more practical choice.

Match Tooth Pattern to Your Material

Skip-tooth blades leave more space between teeth and clear sawdust well in wood. Hook-tooth blades cut faster with a more aggressive angle. Scroll blades use a fine, narrow tooth built for detail work and tight curves, not speed.

Check TPI for Cut Speed and Finish

Lower TPI cuts faster and leaves a rougher edge. Higher TPI cuts slower and leaves a smoother edge. Thin material and detail work call for higher TPI. Thick stock and resaw cuts call for lower TPI.

Confirm Blade Length Fits Your Machine

Blade length is set by your bandsaw's wheel size, not by the cut you're making. Check your machine's manual or specs page for the correct length before ordering width or tooth pattern.
