Choosing a 20 Inch Bandsaw

Every saw in this class delivers strong resaw capacity, but motor power and available phase options vary between JET and Powermatic. The right model depends on your shop's electrical service and budget.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a 20 inch bandsaw:

  • Motor power and phase: The JET JWBS-20 runs a 3 HP single-phase motor. Powermatic's PM2013B and PM2013BT step up to 5 HP, with both single-phase and three-phase options.
  • Cutting capacity: The JWBS-20 cuts up to 16 inches high. The PM2013B and PM2013BT cut up to 18 inches.
  • Table coating: The Powermatic PM2013BT adds an ArmorGlide coated table for reduced friction and wear. The PM2013B and JWBS-20 use standard uncoated cast iron.
  • Weight and price: The JWBS-20 is the lightest and least expensive option at 588 pounds. Powermatic's 20 inch models run 950 pounds or more and are priced for heavier daily use.

Once you know your available power and budget, comparing cutting capacity and table features will narrow the field quickly.

20 Inch Bandsaws FAQs

What's the difference between the Powermatic PM2013B and PM2013BT?

The PM2013BT adds an ArmorGlide coated table designed to reduce friction and resist wear. The PM2013B uses a standard uncoated cast iron table and costs less, with no difference in cutting capacity.

Why would I need three-phase power for a 20 inch bandsaw?

Three-phase power runs large motors more efficiently and draws less current per phase, which is why it's standard in most commercial and industrial buildings. If your shop already has three-phase service, the PM2013B and PM2013BT both offer it as an option. If you're on standard single-phase wiring, either model still works fine.
