Choosing a Stationary or Floor Standing Bandsaw

A stationary bandsaw sits permanently on the shop floor rather than a bench, giving you more cutting capacity and power than a benchtop model. With this many machines to choose from, the fastest path is knowing your resaw needs, your available power, and how much floor space you can dedicate.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a stationary bandsaw:

  • Floor space and weight: These machines run 185 to over 1,100 pounds and need a permanent spot on your shop floor. Confirm clearance for the machine, infeed and outfeed stock, and your delivery path.
  • Cutting capacity: Cutting height ranges from 6 to 24 inches across this lineup. For serious resaw work, our Resaw Bandsaws collection narrows the field to models built for it.
  • Motor power and voltage: Motors range from 1 to 5 HP on 115V, 230V, or three-phase power, depending on the model.
  • Size class: Most of our stationary saws fall in the 14 inch class. If you know you want that size specifically, our 14 Inch Bandsaws collection is the faster path.

Once you know your resaw needs, available power, and floor space, narrowing by size class or capacity will get you to the right model quickly.

What's the difference between a stationary and benchtop bandsaw?

Stationary bandsaws sit permanently on the shop floor and offer more cutting capacity and power. Benchtop models are lighter and sit on a workbench, trading capacity for a smaller footprint. See our Benchtop Bandsaws collection for compact options.

How much floor space does a stationary bandsaw need?

Plan for the machine's footprint plus clearance to feed stock in front and behind it. These saws run 185 to over 1,100 pounds, so also confirm your delivery path and floor can support the weight.

Do I need three-phase power for a stationary bandsaw?

Only for select higher-capacity models. Most stationary bandsaws run on standard 115V or 230V single-phase power. Three-phase options are available on select Powermatic models — see our Industrial Band Saws collection.
